Arm Holdings is the highest-margin toll booth in computing, and the AI era is raising the tolls. The stock has been through a rough stretch lately — a record quarter still got sold off on smartphone unit jitters and broader AI-chip sentiment — but the business underneath keeps compounding in ways that are easy to miss if you're staring at the tape instead of the architecture.
Start with the moat. Every smartphone on earth runs on Arm. So do most of the custom server chips at the hyperscalers: AWS Graviton, Google Axion, Microsoft Cobalt, Meta's in-house designs, NVIDIA's Grace. Roughly 350 billion Arm-based chips have shipped, and more than 22 million developers write software compiled for the architecture. That isn't an IP licensing business anymore. That's a standard.
Now the part of the story that matters most: the v9 transition. Arm's newer v9 architecture commands roughly twice the royalty rate of v8 — about five percent of chip value versus two-and-a-half to three. At last disclosure, v9 was already about 31 percent of royalty revenue, and management has since stopped publishing the split because the direction is obvious. Every new premium phone SoC, every new server CPU, every AI PC chip is v9. Arm's smartphone royalties grew around 50 percent on single-digit unit growth in an early v9 cycle. That's a pure rate story, and the rate only goes one way.
The financials back up the toll booth thesis. Fiscal 2026 revenue hit $4.92 billion, up 23 percent, split between $2.61 billion in royalties and $2.31 billion in licensing. The just-reported first quarter of fiscal 2027 delivered $1.29 billion, up 22 percent — a record for a Q1. The headline number, though, is gross margin around 97.5 percent: cost of goods was barely 2.5 percent of revenue. This is a software-margin business wearing a chip costume, with zero fab capex, zero inventory, and no manufacturing cyclicality beyond the volumes its customers ship.
The accelerant is the data center. Arm's data center royalties have more than doubled year over year for four straight quarters, and more than a billion Neoverse cores are now deployed. Cloud AI and networking royalties are projected to reach about half of total royalty revenue by fiscal 2028, up from the low 30s today. Meanwhile Compute Subsystems — Arm's pre-integrated, higher-priced chip blueprints — have signed 21 licenses across 12 companies, with the top four Android vendors already shipping CSS handsets and royalties escalating on a per-device-cycle basis. Arm doesn't just raise the toll; it now sells the upgrade package.
The edge story is the sleeper. AI is moving inference onto devices — AI smartphones, AI PCs, robotics, automotive — and every major edge platform from NVIDIA's Jetson to Qualcomm's Snapdragon is built on Arm. Arm collects a royalty on essentially every winner in edge AI. It is the sell-shovels-to-everyone play in a gold rush where the gold is inference.
Then there's the new tension that makes this interesting. In March 2026, Arm shipped its first-ever silicon: the AGI CPU, a 136-core Neoverse V3 part on TSMC's 3nm process, with Meta as lead customer and demand already north of $2 billion against an initial $1 billion opportunity. The neutral toll booth just became a competitor to its own licensees — the one thing that could, over a long horizon, push frustrated customers toward RISC-V.
The risks are real, and they're worth stating plainly. The Qualcomm litigation is the clearest crack in the ecosystem story: Arm lost the Nuvia case outright, its largest customer's counter-suit has been grinding through Delaware courts well into 2026, and the outcome remains unresolved. Arm China has historically contributed roughly 21 percent of revenue, and the top five customers account for more than half — concentration that export controls could suddenly punish. RISC-V keeps creeping up from the low end, though it has essentially no data center traction and no binary compatibility to threaten Arm's software moat.
None of that changes the core math. Arm doesn't carry fabs, doesn't hold inventory, and doesn't eat memory-price cycles the way chipmakers do. It collects a toll on every chip that ships, and the AI era is raising the tolls — through v9's doubled rates, through premium CSS designs, through more cores per chip, and now through silicon of its own. The road isn't threatened. The road is just getting more expensive to drive on.
